A Kenyan court has sentenced doomsday cult leader Paul Mackenzie to 200 years in prison for his role in the mass murder of 191 followers including 190 children in the remote Shakahola forest. Presiding over the Mombasa High Court, Justice Diana Kavedza handed down two consecutive 100-year terms for the murder of child and adult victims, emphasizing that Mackenzie held primary criminal culpability as the head of the Good News International Ministries. The landmark ruling marks a pivotal moment of justice following the horrific 2023 discovery of hundreds of bodies buried in mass graves across coastal Kenya.

The court heard harrowing testimony detailing an organized system where Mackenzie ordered his followers to systematically starve themselves and their families under the promise of “meeting Jesus” before the apocalypse. Evidence revealed that children were forced to fast first while armed guards locked up, beat, and left to die anyone who attempted to escape or sneak food.
Beyond starvation, forensic examinations revealed that several young victims died from direct homicide, including strangulation, suffocation, and blunt-force trauma.
In delivering the judgment, Justice Kavedza severely reprimanded Kenyan state institutions and security agencies for ignoring early warnings about Mackenzie’s extremist activities. Urging parliamentary intervention to enact stricter oversight on religious organizations, the court declared that systemic regulatory failures must be addressed to ensure such fanatical atrocities are never repeated.
